No, no, you have no idea. It actually IS the beginning of the whole so-called “kawaii culture”. And it started because girls started using mechanical pencils, which provided fine handwriting. After being banished (more precisely, during the 80s), this kind of writing started being used in products like magazines and make-up. And, during this time, icons we usually associate with the whole kawaii industry (like the characters from Sanrio) came to life too.
And what many people don’t realize is that this subculture was born as a way for young girls to express themselves in their own way. And it was also used as something against the adult life and the traditional culture, often seen as dull and boring and oppressive. By embracing cuteness, these young girls (and adult women, after a while) were showing non-conformation with the current standards.
So yep. Kawaii is important, and it all started with cute, simple handwritting a few hearts and cat faces in some girls’ school notebooks <3
!!!!!
NO OK THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!
This is also how the kawaii fashions started! Girls began dressing in cute and off beat styles for themsleves, they were criticized by adult figures telling them “you’ll never find a husband if you dress that way!” to which they began to reply “Good!”
All the Japanese subcultures and fashions that evolved out of this became a rebellion to tradition and the starch gender roles and expectations the adults were forcing on the younger generations. As early as the 70s and still to this day you’ll see an emphasis on child-like fashion and themes in more kawaii styles and the dismissal of the male gaze with styles like lolita (a lot of western people assume lolita is somehow sexual due to the name of the fashion, but ask any Japanese lolita and they will tell you that men hate the style and find it unattractive which is sometimes a large reason they gravitate towards the style - they can express their femininity and individuality while remaining independent and without the pressure to appeal to men)
Its so so so important to understand the hyper cute and ‘odd’ fashions of Japanese girls carry such a huge message of feminism and reclaiming of their own lives.
so are you telling me that Japan’s punk phase was really the kawaii phase
Kawaii is so goth

I did not know this but I love this form of feminism!

Which is why you get bands like BABYMETAL, which toured with Judas Priest for a while, looking like this:

Reblogging because you kids need to know, dammit! Also, any time someone tries the ‘women and girls don’t invent things’ bullshit and wants to prove it by patents or who first made money off it, remember that this is how it goes.
fuck it, I’m romanticizing underrated ao3 works now. 8,000 word fics with only 13 kudos, even after 5 months. multi-chaptered works with only 11 comments from the same 3 people and the author themself. incredibly specific works featuring OC’s mingling with canon characters that only get 5 kudos. rare-pair fics. gift works that are literally ONLY for the receiver.
Of course, “working quietly with union leadership to find a solution that gets the workers everything they want without requiring them to strike” isn’t an ideal solution for people who value the act of striking itself over achieving the goals of a strike, but social media’s obsession with Performance Politics and their preference for an Exciting Nothing over a Boring But Good Something is nothing new
you’re assuming that a strike wouldn’t have had a good outcome, which is not a reasonable assumption when the threat of a strike was enough to force these concessions
According to the union itself, it was not in fact the threat of a strike which forced this outcome, but was, in fact, largely the dedicated work of the Biden administration.
It kinda doesn’t matter whether or not a strike would’ve had a good outcome, because the good outcome was achievable without a strike. If you can get what you want without a fight, what kind of moron would you have to be to choose to have the fight anyway? Does it matter that you’re prepared to fight if you have to, if it turns out you don’t have to? Does it matter that fighting would’ve got the job done, if the job could’ve gotten done without a fight?
This is what I mean about how people “value the act of striking itself over the goals of a strike.” To the people who say shit like the above, the idea of workers wanting to avoid a strike doesn’t even occur to them, even though for most workers, “we get what we want without needing to strike to get it” is what one might consider “the ideal outcome.”
eating buttered bread with honey and some cheese like a medieval peasant . this shit is sublime

No means No, even if it’s a big name author with tons of lawyers behind them. When they say “please don’t show me fan fic,” that’s enough, and, if they give more detail about why, you don’t get to judge whether you think they’re telling the truth or not
To clarify: I saw a post where someone said they didn’t believe that Big Name Authors were genuinely afraid of being sued, but that instead they were just snobs who hated fanfic and thought saying “oh no I could get sued” was more polite than sharing their true feelings
Another author shared a detailed, eloquent explanation of what a bad take that was, and all of the points were 100% valid
but
No Means No
and I was just so baffled that the OP was more willing to spin a tale of authors all agreeing to the same lie about not wanting to get sued so they could hide their disdain for their fans, than just respecting the requests not to do it
Authors who hate fanfic are not afraid to say so.
Authors who love fanfic are not afraid to say so.
We are not collectively in the business of lying for free. We get paid for that. So no, we’re not running a mass conspiracy to lie to you about our feelings.
i’ve seen a couple people in the notes of this very good post about fictional polyamory by @thebibliosphere say things along the lines of “oh, i’ve been doing it wrong :(” or “how do i know if i did this right??” or “i should probably give up and start over, i wrote this badly :(” and. no!!!!
(i AM seeing far MORE people say “oh, this clarified and helped me so much, i think i know how to fix issues i’ve been having with my own story” which. YES!!!!)
listen. if you’re a monogamous person who’s writing a polyamorous relationship, and you’ve been focusing mainly on The Triad and All Three Together All The Time as the endgame, that’s literally fine. that’s a perfectly acceptable and strong starting point for your plotting, imo. you do not need to give up on a story that you’ve started like this.
but the things discussed in the post Can and Should improve your execution!
you can keep the same plot beats and overall relationship arc 100%. polyamorous relationships are infinite in their formations, every one is unique. “basically a monogamous romance but with three people” Does exist, as a relationship type. you’re not hashtag Misrepresenting ™ poly people with it
BUT i do think it will help to read up on some poly people talking about how their relationships Differ from monogamous ones.
so i have outlined some basic important concepts about polyamory.
MORE IMPORTANTLY though, i’ve broken down some questions that you can answer throughout the writing process to strengthen your individual dyad relationships, your individual characterization, & your characters’ individual feelings/experiences. this is a writing resource have fun
future kitkat butting in to say i spent over two hours writing this and it definitely needs a readmore. it is also NOT comprehensive. but everything should be pretty simple to follow! feel free to reblog if you find it helpful yourself or just want to reward me for how gotdan long this took KSLDKFJKDL.
i’ve grabbed quick links for a couple of the important concepts, some have SEO pitches in them but the info largely seems to be good. (if i missed anything Egregiously Gross on these sites i should be able to update the links with better ones later, since they’re under the readmore.)
sidenote: this is NOT meant to be overwhelming, despite the length. if you can’t read all of this, that’s Okay. you do not need to give up on your writing.
I will say one thing: if you are looking for advice, don’t go to the r/polyamory subreddit. They tend to be unnecessarily mean about non-polyam people writing about polyamory. Hell, they’re mean about polyamorous people writing polyamory too if it’s not the kind of polyamory they want to see 😅
But yes, please ask!! We’re happy to help increase the diversity of polyamorous representation!
insane how many people just have these incredible artists in their families who get no recognition outside of crocheting circles because this art form is devalued for its association with women
in my country, the word for crocheting, is used metaphorically, to compliment a surgeon’s work.
every AFAB person my mother’s age and older, had practiced this craft at one point on another.
My mom has made literal paintings, that decorate our house for years (I’ll come back with pictures when I visit next) you can only see that they are crocheting when you go very close.
as promised here’s my mom’s crocheting “paintings”
There is another one but it had been stored many years ago, (i remember it from my childhood) and sadly it is probably damaged by mold, it depicted wild horsed running in nature
